History:

  • The State IRTA organization was founded in 1955.
  • Our Local was established 6 years later in 1961.

  • The history of HSCRTA from 1961-1990 was collected during Jean Gilbornes Presidency.
  • Gladys Vincent was given credit for helping.
  • Reseach was down by Crystal Stall between 1990-1999.

  • On May 3, 1961 several former teachers of Henry County met at Davidson’s Restaurant in Kewanee for the purpose of organizing a unit to help the teachers with the problems which retirement brings. The acting chairperson was Minnie Elmberg of Kewanee. The following committee was appointed to draft a constitution:
    • Mrs. Alta McFate
    • Ms. Mrtyle Nelson
    • Ms. Marjorie Brown
  • The group met twice more in 1961: July 28 and October 20.
  • It was determined that the group would meet five times a year with a noon meal and meeting to follow.

    • 2009 - Half of the 509 Retired Teachers in Henry/Stark county are members of the state IRTA
